Week 9

Final Paper Proposal - Artificial Meats

With hundreds of meat options in stores all coming from farms across the United States, the idea of artificial meats grown in cell culture seems daunting but economical. Over 94.4 million cattle and 504.5 million chickens populate the United States alone. The idea of cultured meats provides solutions for land usage and produced crops for growing these animals as commodities in grocery stores.

The Creative Potential of Carbon Nanotubes

For my final paper topic, I would like to end right where we began - with carbon. Indeed, carbon is a very unifying substance (perfect to tie together the topics in this class), as it is practically everywhere. Carbon is in all of our food, in every plant and tree, in every animal, and of course, it is the element that holds our DNA together. Who we are at the most intrinsic level is literally written with a carbon alphabet.

Final Paper Proposal: Model Organisms

For my final paper, my main focus will be centered on the contributions of model organisms towards scientific research. Of course, there are many model organisms that have been used throughout the history of research, and it can be assured that all of them are important for the advancement of scientific knowledge. However, there are far too many to give ample and adequate descriptions of. Therefore, within my paper, I plan to focus the most on a few key organisms, highlighting their specific uses/contributions, as well as emphasizing their importance.

Exploring Music In the Operating Room

I’ve always been beyond intrigued with the relationship of music and medicine, specifically the use of music in the operating room. I remember the first time I encountered a picture of a man undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor while simultaneously playing the violin. It is amazing to see the wondrous abilities of the human body in addition to the wondrous effects music can have on the human body. Thus far, we were able to explore the intersectionality of frequencies and the rhythm of the human heart.

Perception: Influences & Alterations

My final paper will focus on the affective perception on to the world we see. Here I will analyze and comment on the different methods where the perception may be impacted through use of art, pharmaceuticals, pathophysiology, and etc. Through this quarter one of the most significant themes that arose for me was the importance that perception albeit different individuals, there is much larger portion where it's shared by society. I think this is where the idea of culture, group identity, or tribe comes from.

Imaging and Microscopes

The beauty behind Art-Sci is how you can take various artistic directions within the field of STEM in order to express yourself or highlight/ elaborate on a specific topic or field. Because of the vast possibility and directions within Art-Sci, we see such amazing final topic ideas as proposed by our class on this site.

An Introduction to Chinese Bread

For my final paper, I have a possible topic idea. I haven't completely decided if this is the topic I am settling on, but I am really interested in this concept, especially after that week we discussed yeast and bread and its environmental effect. However, I wanted to diverge a bit from that topic and discuss "bread" in Chinese culture, the different forms/types that exist, and how they each play a role on the environment due to the components that make up each of them.

Week 8 - Final Paper Proposal: Exploring Italy Through Bread: The Intersection of Each Region’s Bread with Art, Culture, and the Environment

Final Paper Proposal-

Title: Exploring Italy Through Bread: The Intersection of Each Region’s Bread with Art, Culture, and the Environment

Final Paper Proposal

Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) is arguably one of the most common proteins used in laboratory research. Its unique glowing feature made this protein both pretty and useful for the advancement of science. GFP was first discovered in 1955 in jellyfish, however it was not until 1962 that Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie, and Roger Y. Tsien discovered the technique to extract GFP from jellyfish for other research purposes.

Final Paper Proposal: Re-evaluating the Relationship between Mankind and Nature in the Age of COVID-19

The relationship between mankind and nature is an interesting one. It represents a love-hate relationship spanning the time period since the conception of humankind. We take from nature, and nature takes something from us. There were many examples throughout history -- from the destruction of Pompeii to the nuclear disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima -- Mother Nature never ceases to reclaim her territory. With the rise of the COVID-19 back in 2020, it was a stark change from the reality we often know. Shops, schools, and parks were closed.

Final Outline Updated

Initial meetings with my group proved somewhat interesting as we had to find a way to somehow connect technology and economy in a seamless way. This proved further difficult as one of my group peers, Josh, had originally come from a much more “social” aspect for his paper and final. Our first course of action was re-shaping of some of our respective papers.

Week 9 Final Essay Updates

After meeting with my group once again, we laid out exactly what points we hope to cover in our essays in order to determine what is the best way to link everything together. We decided to do the presentation in a somewhat chronological order with Carolyn going first as she would be talking about the past. Her paper will discuss the past and present about vaccine protest and opposition.

(Anti)Anti-Vax Group & Individual Updates/Draft

My group is structuring our group in chronology (past, present, and future implications of anti-vaccine movements), and my topic falls within the “present” category. Our chapter is specifically geared towards explaining the history behind the anti-vaccine movement, how it is playing out today during the COVID-19 pandemic, and future ideas and implications of how we can combat these anti-vax ideals moving forward, as artists, scientists, and as a society as a whole.

My chapter will be titled, “Art in the Quest to Vaccinate the World”
