Week 3

Week 3: Connecting to Nature

It was a very fun and enjoyable trip to the botanical garden on Wednesday. The last time I visited was Winter 2020 when I went with my LS7B class. I wish I had visited more often because it's such a beautiful place with many native and non-native plants and trees. Visiting the botanical garden reminded me of the much-needed break from my electronic screens. In fact, I enjoyed nature and the presentations so much that I forgot to take photos. This is a photo I found online of the entrance to the botanical garden (Jong).

Botanical Gardens: The Tongva and the Turtle

I am a senior here at UCLA, meaning I've spent almost four wonderful years living in Westwood and near campus. I regretfully admit that in these four years I've probably visited the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden one or two times. I often forget that I have access to such a beautiful and peaceful sanctuary tucked away in Westwood.

Quipu, Butterflies, and Maize

I had only been to the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical gardens once before this visit but this time around I gained an elevated respect for this oasis.  It is crazy to think that such a beautiful place is smack dab in the middle of the streets and buildings of Westwood. The team keeping up the gardens does a wonderful job and now I can't wait to go back. I had no idea that the gardens evolve with new exhibits rotating through the area.

Blog 3 - Botanical Gardens and Maize

This week, we took a look at the Botanical Gardens, as well as diving into a ritual and a tour of the gardens with a look into Alvaro Azcarraga’s research. With the Botanical Gardens tour, what I thought was very interesting was the specific garden provided to the Tongva people to use as their own community garden. This made me interested in what plants the Tongva utilized in their everyday lives.
