Event #3: Nina Sobell and Unspoken Mysteries

For my third event, I decided to attend the Nina Sobell Zoom event in which she discussed and showcased her revolutionary work. Her art focuses on web-based performances that create intimate connections. Honestly, attending this event I had never heard the name Nina Sobell before, but now I will forever remember it! She used EEG scanning methods to capture visual pictures of two people connecting non-verbally.

Week 8 - One breath poems

For this week’s class, we had the opportunity to listen to Xtine Burrough’s presentation about her work and collaborations on her work ‘Art As Social Practice: Technologies for Change’. In many of the social psychology classes that I’ve taken, there have been many discussions about the ways in which our social practices are formed. It wasn’t up until this class that I had the opportunity to explore this subject from the art perspective and what that would mean for our society.

Event 2: Jess Irish Talk

Last Thursday I attended the Jess Irish talk on zoom and had the chance to see her short film called “Mortal Plastiks”. I very thoroughly enjoyed it and was happy to hear from her after watching the film and seeing what she had created. I thought the concept was brilliant as the film used emphatic strategies to make the message standout and be meaningful to everyone who watched it. I really liked her reference when she said that “plastics have become the 21st century whale”.

Week 7 - MicroPlastics

During this week, we had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Gimzewski as he lectured about plastics and microplastics and their effects on our environment and the way that we live. In his lecture, he discussed that plastics are now a part of every aspect of our lives. It is in our products, it is in our environment it is even in our air. He classified plastics into four categories: nanoplastics, microplastics, mesoplastics, macroplastics. Furthermore, Dr.

Week 5 - Fowler Museum

During this week, our class had the opportunity to venture into the Fowler museum. This was an incredible experience because it was yet another place on campus that I hadn’t had the time to visit prior to taking this class. What I found very interesting was the speech delivered by Alba Pereda. She gave us an insightful speech that allowed us to learn even more about Khipu’s and their prevalence in society. They are artifacts of history that hold so many mysteries and through interdisciplinary approaches, scientists are attempting to decode them.

Week 4 - Star Dust

Unfortunately, due to sickness, I was not able to attend the class and the visit to UCLA’s planetarium this week. However, I learned a lot from my classmate’s blog posts and from the ones that did attend the planetarium. Based on the reaction of my other classmates, the planetarium seemed much smaller than originally imagined! This is quite a surprise to me as I would have imagined it to be larger in scale. Nonetheless, it was wonderful to read about the amazing experiences that my fellow classmates had during their visit.
