Event #3: Fowler Museum - Aboriginal Screen-Printed Textiles

I was able to visit the Fowler Museum once more, however, this time I explored the Aboriginal Screen-Printed Textiles from Australia’s Top-End exhibit! I found the exhibit to be incredibly beautiful and interesting - I could’ve walked around for hours looking at the various textiles and reading the corresponding information!

Event #2: Nina Sobell + Brain Art

I attended Nina Sobell’s lecture on Brain Art and found it to be incredibly interesting. Nina is a “contemporary sculptor, multimedia, and performance artist” who utilizes mediums I don’t typically associate with art: EEG technology, closed-circuit television, and internet communication.

Week 8: One Breath Poem

This week we were lucky enough to have Xtine Burrough, media artist, author, and UT Dallas Associate Professor, join our class discussion and speak to us about her work. During the online portion of class, Xtine explained her book, Art as Social Practice, and the inspiration behind it.

Event #1: This Moral Plastic

I really appreciate Jess Irish for taking the time to speak with us and for sharing her lyrical nonfiction film, This Moral Plastic. This film explores the “world’s most impersonal substance; plastics.” I particularly loved watching this film after last week’s discussion on plastics. It entered the conversation with more knowledge than I had prior to our discussion, which ultimately allowed me to better understand Jess’s work.

Week 7: Thoughts on Plastic

I am so appreciative of Dr. Gimzewski for speaking with us today about plastics! It was an incredibly informative and eye-opening discussion. While I have heard of the detrimental impact plastic has had on our environment a handful of times in my life, I am without a doubt shocked everytime I hear of the statistics. I hope to reflect on the key takeaways below, as well as discuss what I think could elicit awareness about the pressing issue of plastics.

Week 6: A Return to Nature

I really enjoyed learning about Professor of sculpture, David Roy, and his project BLACKNASA. I greatly appreciate David telling us his story and the significant impact a simple road trip would have on his work going forward, as I found it to be both incredibly disheartening and inspirational at the same time. David spoke to having confronted the realities of life in America during his 2019 road trip from California to Connecticut.

Week 5: Communication Systems in a Global Context

This week we visited the Fowler Museum, located right here on campus. I’ve always walked by the museum and wondered what it’s like inside. I have had it on my bucket list to visit before graduating, so I was very excited to hear that I’d be seeing what it has to offer while exploring various world arts and cultures. It definitely did not disappoint - what a beautiful museum with incredible works of art!
