Event #3: Hox Zodiac: honoring the horse

I enjoyed hearing the presenters speak about what the Hox zodiac meant to them and their own personal experiences with horses were. I am inexperienced with Hox zodiac dinners, so it was interesting to see one in action. I was interested in Linda Weintraub’s comment about how horses have a powerful role in mythology so I decided to look more into how horses are represented in different cultures.

Event #1 - Jess Irish

Jess Irish’s short film about plastic was very interesting. One part that stood out to me was how plastic can also mean capable of change or modification. This resonated with me because many of the plastics created today are thrown into landfills or the ocean, to remain in their form for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Biodegradable plastics and recycling

I found the talk about plastics very informative but at the same time, very depressing. Even though I don’t think I can completely comprehend the magnitude of plastics that are made and consumed every day, I was shocked at the amount of plastic that’s created. One surprising fact that I learned is that shoelaces are made out of plastic. After the talk, I noticed that I was more aware of the things that I own and buy that are made out of plastic.

Week 6: representative art

I really enjoyed seeing the socks/thoughts exhibit. I resonated a lot with the artist and her reasoning behind creating that exhibit. It was awesome to see how she used art to destress and as a way to clear her head. I truly believe that it is very important that everyone has an activity or strategies that they can depend on when they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. The socks on the wall were a wonderful visualization of different kinds of negative and stormy thoughts.
